The journey · built in public

From a sketch to early access.

Every version of ChatEZ, one step at a time: what we built, why it mattered, and the post we shared when it landed.

Dev log v0.9: Pick up where you left off

LATEST · v0.9 Pick up where you left off →

  1. Dev log v0.1: The idea

    v0.1 · DEV LOG 1 OF 9

    The idea

A rough sketch of one question: what would stream chat look like if it were designed around the people who run it every day?

    • Chat first
    • “Needs a look” panel
    • Actions next to the message
  2. Dev log v0.2: Foundation

    v0.2 · DEV LOG 2 OF 9

    Foundation

The first runnable desktop shell: a Rust/Tauri core, a React + TypeScript interface, a night theme, channel tabs and sample chat.

    • Rust / Tauri
    • React + TypeScript
    • Night theme
  3. Dev log v0.3: First connection

    v0.3 · DEV LOG 3 OF 9

    First connection

Signed in with Twitch, joined a real channel and turned raw IRC into readable lines. Kappa was still just a word.

    • Twitch OAuth
    • chat:read
    • Basic parser
  4. Dev log v0.4: Chat comes to life

    v0.4 · DEV LOG 4 OF 9

    Chat comes to life

The details were always in the message. Name colours, timestamps, badges and Twitch emotes now make it on screen.

    • Name colours
    • Badges
    • Twitch emotes
  5. Dev log v0.5: Joining the conversation

    v0.5 · DEV LOG 5 OF 9

    Joining the conversation

Listening was half of it. ChatEZ can talk back: messages are checked, sent through Twitch and shown with your own name and badges.

    • user:write:chat
    • 500-character check
    • Send
  6. Dev log v0.6: Find the right emote

    v0.6 · DEV LOG 6 OF 9

    Find the right emote

Four emote catalogues, one menu. Search Twitch, 7TV, BTTV, FFZ and emoji together; a click inserts the name.

    • 7TV · BTTV · FFZ
    • Emote search
    • Emoji
  7. Dev log v0.7: Keep the conversation together

    v0.7 · DEV LOG 7 OF 9

    Keep the conversation together

A mention finds a person, a reply finds a message. Replies show the original above, with a conversation pane to follow the thread.

    • @mentions
    • Replies
    • Conversation view
  8. Dev log v0.8: Smoother chat

    v0.8 · DEV LOG 8 OF 9

    Smoother chat

Small things that add up: :emote search while typing, smarter @ suggestions, live channel tabs and a channel activity panel.

    • :emote search
    • Live tabs
    • Activity panel
  9. Dev log v0.9: Pick up where you left off

    v0.9 · DEV LOG 9 OF 9

Pick up where you left off

Our own logo and colours, Add Channel, Settings, and a saved workspace. Close it, open it, and your tabs and sign-in are still there.

    • Settings
    • Reconnecting
  10. ● NOW · v1.0 → v1.18.4

    Early access

From 1.0 the moderator workspace arrived: signals and highlights, watch lists, inline actions, channel dashboards and opt-in local recording. Every release since is in the changelog.
